Health Craft Clinic Acupuncture<\/h2>\n

One of the joys of being an open-minded physiotherapist is being able and willing to combine traditional Western medicine and techniques with those from other cultures. Acupuncture, for example, can be used in conjunction with traditional treatments in order to achieve results that can be of great benefit to our patients. A practice that stems from traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture \u2013 or \u201cmedical\u201d acupuncture \u2013 can be quite effective for a variety of issues.<\/p>\n

Understanding acupuncture<\/h3>\n

While we understand that acupuncture is not for everyone, we have indeed watched many of our patients benefit greatly from its use. We also know that the word \u201cneedles\u201d or \u201cneedling\u201d can be frightening to some individuals, so we strive to help our patients better understand the techniques involved in acupuncture and how it can be used to aid them in the recovery process.<\/p>\n

Traditional Chinese practitioners believe that the body has about 2,000 acupuncture points, all connected by pathways, sometimes referred to as meridians. These pathways create Qi, an energy flow that courses through the body and is responsible for an individual\u2019s health. When these pathways are blocked, the energy flow is disrupted, possibly resulting in illness. Placing the needles helps open the pathways, restore balance, and improve health. This happens because acupuncture points are believed to stimulate the central nervous system, which \u2013 in turn \u2013 releases helpful chemicals into your muscles, brain, and spinal cord.<\/p>\n

But does it hurt?<\/h3>\n

Most patients who prefer to avoid acupuncture are concerned about pain. Of course, that\u2019s natural. In western medicine, we associate needles (or injections) with discomfort. However, patients who choose acupuncture report very little or sometimes no pain at all during the process.
Nonetheless, we talk to our patients extensively when we recommend acupuncture, making sure they are comfortable with giving it a try, and we carefully explain the process.<\/p>\n

Once the patient has given his\/her consent, we proceed with the needling. The needle lengths vary in size, including 15mm, 30mm, 40mm, and 75mm. Different body parts require different lengths to be effective. Depending on the patient’s comfort level, we insert a number of needles in and around the affected area. We stimulate the area by moving the needle in and out of the affected region either manually or with an electrical stimulation unit. Needles remain for a prescribed amount of time before they are removed entirely.<\/p>\n
